  • What type of training do naturopathic physicians acquire?
    Naturopaths are highly trained physicians. A bachelor degree and standard premedical courses are required prior to admissions to the naturopathic medical program. To be a licensed naturopathic physician, graduation from an accredited 4 year naturopathic medical school and completion of Provincial board examinations is required. Continuing education courses are also mandatory to maintain licensure.

    The first visit with a Naturoapthic physicaian typically is an hour long. A complete health history is attained and and specific lab tests can be ordered if indicated. The physician may also request medical records. The review of the test results will be conducted during the second visit, along with a physical exam before any treatment recommendations.
  • What type of diagnostic and lab testing do naturopathic physicians use?
    Naturopaths can order a variety of tests of the blood and urine such as those performed in routine physical exams. They may also order specialized testing for hormone balance, toxic metals, food allergies,nutritional evaluations, and digestive function. Physicians may refer to screening and diagnostic exams such as a EKG, colonoscopy, bone mineral density test, mammogram, and ultrasound.
  • Is naturopathic medicine covered by insurance?
    In British Columbia, Naturopathic Doctor’s fees are not covered by basic Medical Services Plan (MSP). However, most extended health care plans have Naturopathic coverage. Please contact your employer or insurance agent to inquire about your Naturopathic coverage.
